Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data Scholar.cx collects, why, and what you can do about it. Scholar.cx is run by Scholar.cx ("we", "us"). By creating an account or uploading a document, you agree to this policy.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address and a scrambled (hashed) version of your password. We never see or store your actual password.
- Documents you upload and the reports and scores produced for them.
- Your report settings, such as whether to exclude your bibliography or quotes.
- Code and check history: which codes you redeemed, how many checks you have, and when you ran each check.
- Technical data: your IP address, used briefly to stop abuse such as password guessing. It is not stored with your account.
You give us this data directly. You must provide your email and password to use the service, and a document to run a check. We don't ask for your name, phone number, institution or payment details.
Why we use it
- To create and secure your account and let you log in.
- To check your documents for similarity and AI writing, and show you the results.
- To add checks from redeem codes, return checks that fail, and answer your questions.
- To prevent fraud and abuse of the service.
We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising.
Who we share it with
To run a check, your document is sent to the checking service provider we work with. It processes the document only to produce your reports. The provider may be located outside Malaysia, so your document may be processed abroad.
Your document is not added to any repository of submitted work, so checking it with us won't cause a match against your own work later.
We may also share data where the law requires it, for example with a court or regulator.
How long we keep it
- Documents and reports: deleted from our server automatically 7 days after the check. Download your reports before then.
- Scores and check history: kept while your account is open, so you can see your past checks.
- Account details: kept until you ask us to close your account.
How we protect it
Your password is stored hashed, the site uses an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and only you and our administrators can open your reports. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the personal data we hold about you,
- correct data that is wrong,
- delete your documents and reports early, or close your account and delete your data, and
- stop using your data for any purpose you didn't agree to.
To do any of these, contact support@scholar.cx. We'll reply within 21 days.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Significant changes will be shown on the site.
